I've long had a Droplr account with a custom short variant of my blog's domain—and it's nice to have, though I got a lifetime Droplr account through a deal years ago, which makes it an easy choice as my only expense is the domain's renewal fee.
For pure link shortening, Bit.ly was one of the early popular options and today it costs $29/month with a yearly plan. There's a free, self-hosted option in Polr if you only want shortened links on your domain name. Another option is Ow.ly, a Hootsuite feature to shorten URLs before sharing them on social media—and it's bundled with Hootsuite's $99/month Team plan. So price-wise, that puts Replug right in the middle, with its additional features with CTA buttons and overlays to further brand links.
Shortened links seemed the most valuable when Twitter especially showed full links in posts, and counted every character of a link towards your Tweet word count (then capped at 140 characters). Today, with Twitter showing links as embeds, and public signage (at least in some parts of the world) being more likely to show a QR code than a short link, there's less need for short branded domains today. Though it still can be nice to have, depending on your needs.
I think it really depends on what your use case is. For me, link shortening is great for social, but it automatically comes with my Buffer account, so I don't pay for yet another monthly subscription to something. (I think basic Buffer for 6 social accounts starts at $15/mo)
Personally, unless you're doing it it 24/7 or need absolutely need short URL metrics, paying $49/mo isn't worth it to me. But it really depends on your use case and frequency of use.
