We need to create a community area for coaching clients. We do NOT want to use a Facebook group, but there are two features that we cannot do without that keep us stuck there:
I know that Tribe.so has a goofy workaround where you can start a Livestream on Youtube and then embed that Livestream into a post, but our goal is to minimize the friction to getting someone to hop on video and record themselves with the community. (The coaching program is about teaching people to improve their on-camera skills).
I realize this may not exist, but can anyone save me from Facebook Groups?
There should be something you can use instead—there have been a number of new community platforms made over the past few years, so hopeful there's something that'd fit your team's needs better than Facebook.
Some newer community apps have been discussed elsewhere on Capiche. In a discussion about tech problems that need solved, community management was mentioned as one of the top things that needs a better solution. A comment there suggested Bevy, Tribe, and Mighty Networks as good options for communities. Another thread about community management tools also mentioned Circle, Commsor, and Discourse as options.
Of those, I just checked to see if any has livestreaming features. Circle looked the most promising. For now it seems to only support embedding video streams from elsewhere, but their pricing page lists Video streaming and video stream recording as features that are coming soon.
Then, Tribe's team replied to a video streaming feature request saying they don't have it "yet" so it's possible they'll add it in the future. Mighty Networks has built-in integrations with YouTube and Facebook Live, along with Zoom, GoToMeeting, and more—so you'd schedule the event in Mighty, then do the actual streaming in the video app. I thought an eLearning/course platform like Teachable might work, but again it suggests embedding a livestream from elsewhere.
Another option could be using a chat app for your community, as both Slack and Discord include video calls and livestreaming options. Though, neither let you record your video calls, so that misses your second need. You could add an integration, say with Zoom, which would let you start a call/video broadcast from Slack, host the call in Zoom, and then share the recording back to Slack once the broadcast is over. That's possibly easier than doing the same in a forum-style community.
You don't have to use Facebook Groups.
Personally, I'm a member of a few Slack-based communities, and I find that interface to be the best. But yeah, you'd then have to use a different platform like Zoom for your video sessions. As a user, I'd be into that, but I understand why you might feel it's less than ideal.
Some webinar tools let you embed webinar experiences on web pages, so you might do well to build a gated website using Buddypress or something like that, and then hosting the videos as embedded webinars on members' only pages.
I've also heard good things about LMS / information product selling platforms supporting proprietary forums that integrate well with other modules, including live video. You've got some information on that here: https://awario.com/blog/alternatives-to-paid-facebook-groups/
Who is going to pay for the video hosting? The community hosting platform will not want to host the video because it is a huge cost; and the people willing to host video for "free", ie the social medias, want to monetize the hell out of the traffic the video incurred.
