Would like to discuss with this community their first impressions on iOS 14, MacOS Big Sur and the best feature you are happy to see on new OS.
I am happy to see new widgets option coming to all three OS (ios, ipad and mac). Also default support of third party applications.
Control centre on MacOS is a game changer I feel.
I think the biggest thing for me was the announcement that Safari would be compatible with Chrome plugins. Chrome’s performance is the worst and the browsing experience is superior on pretty much every other browser but I’ve never been able to leave it because I rely on a bunch of plugins.
Keeping my fingers crossed that Safari on iPadOS gets support too since Chrome plugins are the biggest thing I miss when I am on my iPad.
I was hoping to see more changes on the cloud-side of Apple's offerings, such as an API for iCloud Drive and Pages/Keynote/Numbers, along with storage tier increases for iCloud, but those were unlikely to happen either way.
The most impactful change will absolutely be Apple switching to using their own chips on Macs—and the companion announcement that iOS/iPadOS apps will run on Mac. And macOS got a number bump to 11, finally. Seems inevitable that Apple's platforms will come closer together over time—which definitely means more casual apps on the Mac, but hopefully also means more pro apps on the iPad.
As @kasparhidayat mentioned, Safari web extensions (ala Chrome extensions on Safari) is a big deal for Safari, and a good thing for the Web as keeping Safari more of a competitor to Chrome and all the browsers built off Chrome.
Being able to set your default browser and email app on iOS/iPadOS is a long-overdue change that's nice to see.
Nice seeing handwriting being a first-class text input option on iPads now too.
I thought the amount of focus put on privacy as a differentiator for them was notable.
Transition to ARM Macs is worrying. Cross-device compatible apps are cool, but concerned about the performance implications and support for certain software (e.g. virtualized Windows). Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
