Question

What are the best Slack apps for remote teams?

We use Slack all the time, but mostly for chat, and would like to find ways to do more directly in Slack. What Slack apps do your team rely on, especially for remote work?

Since our company has been work remote in April of 2020 we have made good use of the Donut app in Slack.

Donut matches random folks (who opt in) to meet for coffee (or wine) and learn more about each other. This creates more accidental "collisions" in the company that are missed as a result of spending the past few months remote.

Best practice is to take a screenshot of you and your Donut partner and share what you learned about them in the channel so everyone knows a little more about each other!

If you go to the Slack directory, they specifically have a "work from home" curated list under Staff Picks. This features companies like Bonusly, Donut, Loom, Zoom, Guru and more. Pick what you like depending on what you need.

I've been enjoying Geekbot a lot. https://geekbot.com/

My team uses it for asynchronous standups. It's a great way to keep people informed of what I'm working on, especially if they're in different time zones and/or not on my team.

Furthermore, since I'm informing everyone what I have planned to complete that day, it serves as an accountability tool/to do list for me for that day. I regularly go back to it midday when I need to refocus.

One of the challenges with remote teams is getting onto a meeting room and doing a group discussion. Tandem (https://tandem.chat) is an app that enables video and screen sharing capabilities for remote teams. Tandem plugs into Slack for messaging and inviting users to join a meeting. You'll love the "Rooms" feature in Tandem, which enabled you to join a conversation instantly - no Meeting IDs or URLs!
